What refinishing involves.
Refinishing is the most common hardwood job we do in NW Arkansas. The floor is structurally sound but the finish has worn through, the color has aged, or you want to change the stain. Refinishing extends the life of the floor by 10 to 25 years for a fraction of the cost of replacement.
The trade calls it sand and finish; homeowners search for refinishing or hardwood floor sanding. They are all the same service. A lighter version called screen and recoat (or buff and recoat) skips sanding to raw wood and just adds a fresh layer of finish on top of the existing. Screen and recoat is the right call when the finish is worn but the wood underneath is in good shape; it costs roughly half as much and takes 1 to 2 days.

In home estimate
Free in home visit. We evaluate the floor condition, identify any board replacement or repair needed first, talk through stain options, and leave a written quote.
Furniture and prep
You move the furniture (or we move it for you for an additional fee). We mask off cabinets, baseboards, and HVAC vents to keep dust contained.
Sanding to raw wood
Three pass sanding sequence with HEPA dust extraction. Coarse, medium, fine grits to bring the floor to raw wood evenly. Edges hand sanded.
Stain (optional)
If you are changing color, we apply Bona Drifast Stain or similar in your selected shade. We sample on site against natural light in your home before committing.
Three coats of finish
Bona Mega or Bona Traffic HD applied in three coats with sanding screens between coats. Lifetime warranty available on Traffic HD.
Cure and walkthrough
24 hours for foot traffic, 48 to 72 hours for furniture, 7 to 14 days before rugs. We walk the finished floor with you before final payment.

Cost factors include the square footage of the job, the floor condition (more board replacement or gap filling raises the price), whether you are changing stain color, the finish you choose (Bona Mega is value, Bona Traffic HD is premium), and access (multi level homes with stairs add labor). Refinishing FAQ.
How is refinishing different from sand and finish?
Same service, different name. Sand and finish is the trade term; refinishing is the homeowner term. Both describe sanding the existing floor to raw wood, applying optional stain, and sealing with three coats of finish.
Do I need to leave the house?
During sanding and finish application, yes for the rooms being worked on. Most homeowners stay home and use other parts of the house, or stay elsewhere for the 3 to 5 day project. Pets and children need to be out of the work area; finish off gas during cure.
Can you change the stain color?
Yes. Custom stain matching and color changes are a core part of refinishing. Common color shifts include red oak going to a darker walnut tone, mid tones going gray, or fully ebonizing for a modern look. We sample on site before committing.
How many times can a floor be refinished?
Solid 3/4 inch hardwood can be refinished 5 to 10 times over its life depending on how much wood is removed each time. Engineered hardwood with a thick wear layer can be refinished 1 to 2 times. Engineered with a thin wear layer cannot be sanded; only screened and recoated.
Do you offer the lifetime finish warranty?
Yes, on jobs finished with Bona Traffic HD. The warranty covers the finish itself; it requires using Bona maintenance products and following recommended cleaning routines.
